DRI Uncovers Major Methamphetamine Smuggling Bid to Saudi Arabia
In a significant breakthrough, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully intercepted a major smuggling operation aimed at exporting large quantities of Methamphetamine from India to Saudi Arabia. This operation was conducted from August 16 to 17, 2026, following meticulous intelligence gathering.
During the operation, officials recovered approximately 56 kg of Methamphetamine in powder form hidden within an export consignment at the Nava Sheva Port. What made this case particularly alarming was the method of concealment: the Methamphetamine was artfully blended with maize in one of the 351 bags intended for export. The authorities acted decisively, seizing the contraband under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
Swift Investigation and Arrests
The DRI’s swift investigative efforts led to the identification and arrest of both the exporter and the freight forwarder associated with this attempt. It was revealed that the freight forwarder was in cahoots with an overseas buyer to facilitate the transportation and customs clearance of the shipment. Their roles in the trafficking scheme resulted in their apprehension under the NDPS Act.
A Sophisticated Smuggling Technique
The method of disguising the Methamphetamine as an ordinary agricultural product underlines the sophistication of the trafficking operation. By intermingling the narcotics with maize, the traffickers aimed to evade detection during routine inspections.
The Dangers of Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine is notorious for its potent effects as a synthetic psychostimulant. It poses significant risks including severe physical and psychological outcomes such as elevated heart rate and blood pressure, agitation, paranoia, and psychosis. Chronic use can lead to drug dependence and serious degradation of health.
This successful operation by the DRI emphasizes the ongoing commitment of Indian authorities to combat the transnational trafficking of narcotic drugs and protect public health from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
