Bihar’s NH-22 Upgraded to Boost Connectivity and Economy
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the upgradation of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa segment of National Highway 22 into a four-lane road. This expansive project, estimated at a cost of Rs. 3,590.73 crore, will span a total length of 82.578 kilometers and will be implemented through a Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
This infrastructure initiative is poised to play a crucial role in bolstering economic and strategic connectivity in Bihar. The upgraded highway will serve as a vital link connecting the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa with key economic hubs, including Muzaffarpur along the NH-27 East-West Corridor. An expected reduction in congestion will benefit densely populated areas such as Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi, and Sonbarsa.
Enhancing Travel Efficiency and Safety
The upgradation of this highway is anticipated to facilitate faster and safer movement for passengers and freight, significantly enhancing travel efficiency and regional connectivity. Designed to accommodate speeds of up to 100 km/h, the highway eliminates at-grade median openings, ensuring that travel is both rapid and safe.
Integrating with National Development Plans
Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, this project will promote multimodal integration by improving access to essential economic, social, and logistics nodes. This will include enhancements to industrial areas and major railway terminals, thus ensuring the efficient movement of goods and supporting local agricultural supply chains. Additionally, the upgraded highway will provide improved access to cultural and religious landmarks such as the Buddhist Circuit and the historic Janaki Punaura Dham Temple in Sitamarhi.
Strategic Importance and Infrastructure Features
The Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa stretch of NH-22 plays a pivotal role in linking to the national freight grid. Synergizing with established corridors like NH-31 and NH-122, this project will strengthen connectivity to industrial zones and logistics hubs along the Ganga River. Furthermore, it will facilitate cross-border passenger and cargo movement near the Land Port at Bhithamore.
To ensure smooth traffic flow and high-speed travel, the project includes plans for seven major bridges—one of which spans 340 meters across the perennial Bagmati River—three Railway Over Bridges (ROBs), and two flyovers measuring 1,170 meters and 270 meters, respectively.
Economic Impact and Improved Mobility
By increasing average travel speeds, reducing travel time, and enhancing overall road safety, this initiative promises to improve fuel efficiency and lower vehicle operating costs, thus fostering enhanced regional mobility and socio-economic growth.
The upgraded corridor will offer seamless connectivity to essential economic, social, and logistics nodes throughout Bihar. Its scope includes efficient links to five PM Gati-Shakti Economic Nodes—spanning four Industrial Estates and one Mega Food Park—as well as four significant Social Nodes, which encompass the Baba Garibnath Temple, Mata Janki Temple, Punaura Dham, and the aspirational districts of Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi. Additionally, the corridor will connect key logistic points such as Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi Railway Stations, streamlining the movement of goods and passengers across the region.
