BRICS Ministers Unite in New Delhi for Environmental Cooperation
In a significant gathering aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues, Shri Bhupender Yadav, the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India, welcomed the Ministers and Heads of Delegations from BRICS member countries to the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi. This event marks India’s leadership in the BRICS group for 2026, emphasizing a unified approach towards sustainability and climate resilience.
During his keynote address, Minister Yadav articulated the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which prioritizes the Global South’s concerns. He outlined BRICS’ objective of “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability” through a people-centric framework. Yadav stressed the urgency of tackling global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, particularly in developing nations where these issues intersect with broader developmental goals.
Shri Yadav called for enhanced cooperation among BRICS nations to combat forest fires, advocating for comprehensive strategies covering preparedness, early warning systems, and post-fire recovery measures. He reiterated the critical need for climate finance and local community empowerment to address these challenges effectively.
Emphasizing Sustainable Development
The Minister shared India’s belief that “ecological restoration and human development can advance together,” referencing initiatives such as Mission LiFE and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. These programs exemplify the fusion of ecological restoration and community involvement. Yadav highlighted the importance of blending traditional knowledge with modern science to create solutions that are both robust and contextually appropriate for local communities.
Highlighting four key priorities during India’s BRICS Chairship, the Minister outlined the promotion of Sustainable Lifestyles, Afforestation and Disaster Resilience, Circular Economy, and Adaptation. He emphasized that these priorities reflect a conviction that environmental efforts must remain focused on people and should be actionable and relevant to the developing countries’ realities.
Collaborative Outcomes
The meeting concluded successfully with the consensual adoption of a Joint Ministerial Statement and the introduction of four Knowledge Compendiums. These documents encompass critical frameworks for knowledge sharing and environmental management, including terms for integrated landscape management and principles for advancing climate resilience.
The gathering also featured engaging panel discussions, including a high-level dialogue on climate change that focused on community-based adaptation strategies. An innovative digital pavilion showcasing India’s Mission LiFE initiative provided attendees with an immersive experience, highlighting efforts to promote sustainable lifestyles through interactive technologies.
In a celebration of cultural exchange, the event concluded with performances by Indian artists, offering delegates a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Indian heritage. This blend of environmental action and cultural appreciation encapsulated the spirit of cooperation that BRICS aims to foster for a sustainable future.
