Indian Army Heads to Thailand for Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-XV
The Indian Army has set off for Thailand to take part in the 15th edition of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise, known as MAITREE-XV, scheduled from August 18 to 31, 2026. This training event will take place at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. The last iteration of the exercise occurred in September 2025 at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
Both the Indian and Royal Thai Army contingents will consist of 85 personnel each. The Indian Army will be primarily represented by troops from the 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army will include members from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade of the 5th Division. This collaborative exercise will focus on company-level training, particularly in jungle and semi-urban environments.
Aim of MAITREE-XV
The primary objective of Exercise MAITREE is to enhance military cooperation between India and Thailand. This joint effort aims to improve the combined capabilities for conducting counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in challenging terrains, as outlined under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. Participants will engage in various activities, including field exercises, lectures, and demonstrations, culminating in a validation exercise to reinforce their training.
As part of the exercise, the contingents will share operational experiences and display contemporary equipment and technologies used in joint operations. Such exchanges are crucial for improving interoperability and mutual understanding between the two armies.
History and Importance
Established in 2006, the MAITREE Joint Military Exercise serves as a vital platform for both nations to share best practices and strengthen their military ties. By collaborating through this exercise, the Indian and Thai armies aim to reinforce their long-standing bilateral relations and foster camaraderie and teamwork.
