India to Host Key BRICS Environment Meetings in 2026

India is gearing up to host the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting in New Delhi on August 18, 2026. This significant event will be preceded by the BRICS Senior Officers’ Meeting of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development on August 17, 2026. The theme for this year’s discussions will revolve around India’s BRICS chairmanship motto: ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.’

Key Discussions and Objectives

The BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting will be led by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav. It aims to create a collaborative platform for ministers, senior officials, policymakers, and experts from the BRICS member nations to engage in meaningful discussions, forge consensus, and enhance environmental cooperation.

The first day will feature the Senior Officers’ Meeting with an inaugural session that addresses the priorities of the BRICS Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.

Day two will culminate in ministerial-level discussions focusing on an outcome document. The focus will be on key thematic areas that represent the BRICS countries’ shared commitment to environmental sustainability and cooperation.

Focused Areas of Engagement

Under India’s BRICS chairmanship, four priority areas have been identified for emphasis during the discussions:

1. Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles: This area encourages mindful consumption and sustainable living within communities, fostering knowledge sharing and innovative practices among member countries.

2. Afforestation, Forest Fire Management, and Disaster Resilience: This initiative aims to enhance land restoration through knowledge exchange, capacity building, and effective forest fire management strategies.

3. Circular Economy: The focus here is on effective waste management and developing robust regulatory frameworks to promote resource efficiency across BRICS nations.

4. Adaptation: Emphasizing community-led adaptation, this area seeks to integrate traditional knowledge to enhance climate resilience.

Pre-Meeting Initiatives

Leading up to the meetings in New Delhi, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has been active in initiating discussions through virtual sessions from March to July 2026. These discussions have included webinars on essential topics such as land degradation and wildfire management, which helped set the stage for upcoming in-person dialogues.

Historical Context

The BRICS Environment Working Group was established in 2015 to address critical environmental priorities and promote collective action among member countries. The Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development followed in 2024 to enhance cooperation on climate issues.
