India Post Makes History with First Drone Delivery of National Flag
In a groundbreaking celebration of patriotism and technological advancement, the Department of Posts has successfully delivered the National Flag, or Tiranga, via drone in Himachal Pradesh. This historic event took place on the eve of Independence Day, marking the first-ever drone delivery of the Tiranga by India Post. The delivery occurred between the Mandi Head Post Office and the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, showcasing an innovative blend of public service and modern technology.
The initiative was inaugurated and executed virtually by the Union Minister of Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. Witnessing the live drone operation from the Mandi Head Post Office, the Minister engaged with postal officials along with the drone operator. Upon its arrival at the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, the National Flag was formally received and handed over to an army veteran, adding a unique layer of significance to the event.
Celebrating India’s Aspirations
During the ceremony, Union Minister Scindia emphasized that the journey of the Tiranga represents a new India, committed to overcoming geographical barriers to reach all citizens. He noted that this Independence Day holds special meaning as the nation commemorates 150 years of Vande Mataram, uniting national pride with a spirit of service and the aspirations for a Viksit Bharat.
Promoting National Pride
Scindia also pointed out that the Tiranga should be present not only in homes but also in the hearts of all Indians. To facilitate this, India Post is contributing to the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign by making the National Flag available for delivery nationwide. This initiative allows citizens to participate in the celebration of national pride directly from their homes.
Innovative Technology and Connectivity
The historic drone delivery from Mandi to Rehardhar highlights the potential of emerging technologies to enhance India Post’s extensive physical network. This move aims to improve last-mile connectivity, particularly in challenging terrains. The Department of Posts is exploring drone-based mail transmission as a means to ensure that postal services continue to reach citizens, even where traditional transportation methods face challenges.

Aligned with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for a technologically advanced and connected Viksit Bharat, the Department of Posts plans to deploy drone-based mail services across 150 selected routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam. This initiative aims to strengthen connectivity and facilitate efficient mail delivery across tough terrains, reflecting the enduring ethos of “Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa” and showcasing a commitment to innovative solutions for serving the nation.
