Indian Army Shines at Glasgow Commonwealth Games with 16 Medals
On August 14, 2026, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh celebrated the remarkable achievements of the Indian Army contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they secured 16 medals, comprising 8 Gold, 7 Silver, and 1 Bronze. Overall, India earned 39 medals during the Games, with the Indian Defence Forces contributing significantly, claiming 18 medals in total—16 from the Army and 2 from the Navy.
During his address, Raksha Mantri praised the unwavering resolve and determination of the Indian Defence Forces athletes, who have showcased their abilities despite facing intense physical and mental challenges. He described their performance as “extraordinary” and affirmed that these sportspersons serve as an inspiring example for youth across the country, embodying the spirit of both soldiers and champions.
Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted the success of women pugilists, who achieved 4 of the 6 Gold medals in boxing, emphasizing this accomplishment as a reflection of India’s burgeoning Nari Shakti. He expressed hope that such achievements would encourage more girls to explore both the sport and opportunities within the armed forces.
He also noted that champions are emerging from diverse regions across India, indicating a democratization of sports that is no longer confined to a select few. The Raksha Mantri extended his best wishes to all athletes competing in future events, including the upcoming Asian Games and the Olympics.

- Havildar Harsh earning India’s first Gold Medal in Judo at the Commonwealth Games.

- In Weightlifting, Havildar Ajaya Babu set a Games Record with a lift of 149 kg in the Snatch in the 79 kg category.
