Over 1,000 Personnel Honored with Gallantry and Service Medals

In a momentous celebration marking Independence Day 2026, a total of 1,057 dedicated personnel from various emergency and correctional services were recognized for their exceptional bravery and service. Among them, 301 received the prestigious Medal for Gallantry, while 756 were honored with different service medals.

Gallantry Medals Awarded

The Medal for Gallantry (GM) is presented to individuals who demonstrate conspicuous courage in protecting life and property, or in thwarting crime. This year, the awardees include 272 police personnel and 29 members from the fire service. Notably, 197 of these gallantry awards were presented to personnel who have served in areas afflicted by Left Wing Extremism, with others going to 51 from Jammu and Kashmir and 12 from the North-East.

Service Medals Recognizing Excellence

In addition to gallantry awards, 92 personnel were awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM). Of these, the majority, 83, were police officers, with the remainder going to the fire service, civil defence, home guards, and correctional services. Moreover, 664 personnel received the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM), including 606 from the police, 28 from the fire service, and others from civil and correctional services.
