Government’s Initiatives Boost Livelihoods for Tribal Communities
In a recent announcement made in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, detailed the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance livelihoods and foster entrepreneurship within tribal communities through two key initiatives. The Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM) and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Maha Nyaya Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) aim to empower this demographic by establishing Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) across the country.
Under the PMJVM scheme, the government has sanctioned the establishment of 4,172 VDVKs, which will serve over 12.48 lakh beneficiaries across 28 states and Union Territories, with an investment of ₹619.17 crore. Additionally, the PM-JANMAN scheme has authorized 540 VDVKs, benefiting approximately 46,000 individuals in 18 states and UTs, allocated ₹23.02 crore for its implementation.
During the three financial years spanning from 2023 to 2026, a total of 617 VDVKs have been initiated under the PMJVM and 540 under PM-JANMAN. These centers focus on various support services including skill development, capacity building, value addition, and processing, along with vital marketing assistance. They are designed to create self-employment options and enhance the livelihoods of tribal populations.
Support from NSTFDC
Moreover, the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) plays a crucial role in providing financial support. This Central Public Sector Enterprise offers concessional loans to eligible Scheduled Tribe individuals, facilitating their entry into income-generating activities and self-employment. Over the last five years, NSTFDC has disbursed loans amounting to ₹1,648.39 crore, directly aiding 495,090 beneficiaries under various financial schemes.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to uplift tribal communities by providing them with the necessary tools and resources to thrive economically. By supporting entrepreneurship and offering financial aid, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs is paving the way for sustainable development within these communities.
