Fuel Quality Reassured: Intensive Testing Confirms E20 Petrol Safety
Recent media discussions regarding moisture and chloride levels in E20 petrol have prompted Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to conduct extensive testing across the entire fuel supply chain. Results from this nationwide initiative confirmed that the quality of fuel remains consistently within the prescribed limits, alleviating concerns about potential contamination.

Stringent Standards in Place
The Indian government has established strict specifications for chloride levels in ethanol used for petrol blending, along with a monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance throughout the supply chain. This rigorous monitoring occurs at multiple points, including refineries, distilleries, depots, and retail outlets, consistently confirming the upheld quality standards.
Enhanced Testing Protocols
In addition to existing quality assurance measures, OMCs have fortified their surveillance protocols. Daily water-ingress and density tests are conducted 8 to 12 times at every retail outlet, complemented by the deployment of mobile fuel quality testing laboratories across various locations. Test results are also independently validated through accredited laboratories to maintain high quality assurance standards.
Key Testing Outcomes
1. At refineries, tests show chloride levels in petrol consistently remain at or below 1 ppm. Over 100 randomly selected petrol samples reaffirm the effectiveness of quality checks in India’s refining processes.
2. Ethanol, a key component blended into petrol, has consistently shown chloride levels well below the prescribed limit. A dedicated task force analyzed samples from 80 distilleries, all reporting chloride content lower than 3 ppm.
3. Ethanol Blended MS (E20) continues to meet these chloride specifications at various depots and through marketing channels. Out of more than 1000 recent samples analyzed, 160 reports indicated chloride levels between 0-3 ppm, contradicting previous claims of high contamination. Only four isolated instances of elevated levels were detected, which were swiftly addressed, ensuring rectification before restoring supplies.
4. Inspections at approximately 90,000 retail outlets revealed no water ingress in underground storage tanks, with daily checks indicating stability in conditions.
