Over 10 Crore Farmer IDs Created to Boost Agricultural Benefits
As of July 20, 2026, over 10.18 crore Farmer IDs have been established in India, significantly improving the efficiency of direct subsidies and technical assistance for farmers. This initiative aims to enhance the benefits available to farmers through various welfare schemes, consolidating the registration processes under programs like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna (PM Kisan) and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna (PMFBY). By integrating these Farmer IDs, states are better equipped to support their agricultural communities.
Leveraging Technology for Improved Crop Insurance
The government has incorporated satellite imagery into the operational framework of the PMFBY to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of crop insurance. Notable advancements include the Yield Estimation System based on Technology (YES-TECH), which utilizes satellite data to provide precise crop yield estimates at the insurance unit level, addressing local yield variations with greater accuracy than traditional methods.
Another groundbreaking approach is the Smart Sampling method for Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs). Rather than relying on random field selections, this method employs satellite-derived vegetation indices to pinpoint areas of different crop health, improving data collection speed and eliminating biases associated with manual sampling.
The integration of remote sensing technology also streamlines dispute resolution between state governments and insurance providers. By employing time-series satellite images, discrepancies in crop conditions can be assessed quickly, leading to faster claim settlements.
In the wake of natural disasters like floods and droughts, rapid assessments of crop damage are conducted using multi-temporal satellite imagery. These evaluations are critical for timely interventions and support for affected farmers.
Promoting Drone Technology in Agriculture
The government is actively promoting the use of agricultural drones under the Sub-Mission on Agriculture Mechanization (SMAM), offering financial assistance of up to 50% for agricultural graduates and small farmers in northeastern states. For other farmers, financial aid covers 40% of the cost of acquiring kisan drones. To date, 2,122 drones have been distributed or approved under this scheme.
Training initiatives for drone operation are conducted at Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institutes (FMTTIs) in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Assam, with 155 drone pilots trained so far. These programs are funded by the institutes from their annual budgets.
Additionally, the Namo Drone Didi Scheme provides a comprehensive training program for members of Women Self Help Groups (SHGs). Participants receive training in drone operation and can obtain a Drone Pilot Licence, with 1,094 drones distributed to selected SHGs across the country. Training takes place in DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organizations (RPTOs), of which there are currently 274.
