India Unveils Ambitious Bioeconomy Roadmap for 2035
NITI Aayog has officially launched a comprehensive roadmap titled “Roadmap for Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035” at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. Developed through collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE), as well as various industry and academic stakeholders, this strategic plan aims to position India as a global leader in bioeconomy within just over a decade.
The roadmap was unveiled by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology, accompanied by notable figures including Prof. Gobardhan Das from NITI Aayog, NITI Aayog CEO Smt. Nidhi Chhibber, Shri Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, and Ms. Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog.
Biotechnology: A Key Driver of Economic Growth
Biotechnology is set to become a vital component of India’s economic growth strategy. Compared to the digital transformation seen in information technology, biotechnology is poised to revolutionize how the world produces essential goods such as medicines, food, chemicals, and climate-resilient solutions. With a solid foundation already in place, India aims to transition from being a trusted global supplier of affordable healthcare products to a dominant bioeconomy powerhouse.
Since 2014, India’s bioeconomy has surged from $10 billion to an anticipated $195.3 billion by 2025, contributing approximately 4.8% to the nation’s GDP. The newly unveiled roadmap seeks to elevate this figure to $691 billion by 2035 and an astounding $2.6 trillion by 2047, all while creating over 30 million jobs in high-value sectors.
Leaders Highlight the Road Ahead
During the launch, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the importance of translating innovation into impactful solutions. He stated, “This Roadmap provides a timely pathway to build on our vision to strengthen India’s emergence as a global biotechnology and biomanufacturing hub.”
Prof. Gobardhan Das remarked that the next decade is crucial for determining India’s role in the global bioeconomy. He noted that India’s mix of scientific talent and manufacturing strengths positions the country uniquely to lead in this new era.
Shri Rajesh S. Gokhale highlighted the need for India to move beyond incremental innovation, focusing instead on creating groundbreaking technologies that can be developed and deployed at scale. The integration of advanced biomanufacturing with entrepreneurial spirit is seen as crucial for building competitive enterprises.
Embracing the Bio Century
Ms. Debjani Ghosh pointed out that alongside artificial intelligence, programmable biology is emerging as a significant transformative force. She asserted that this “Bio Century” presents India with a historic opportunity to influence market rules and frameworks.
A central feature of the roadmap is the establishment of six National BioMissions aiming to fortify India’s capabilities in various sectors, including health and agriculture. These missions will facilitate advancements in affordable therapies, climate-resilient agriculture, and more effective disease surveillance.
Investment in Future Technologies
To support these initiatives, a proposal has been made to allocate ₹50,000 crore from the existing ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation framework to establish a BioEconomy Growth Fund. This fund will focus on scaling biomanufacturing infrastructure and advancing therapeutics, among other goals.
The launch event saw participation from senior government officials, industry representatives, academia, startups, and other stakeholders, all contributing to India’s biotechnology ecosystem.
