ICMR-MINDS Initiative Wins Gold Award for AI Innovation

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has celebrated a significant achievement as its flagship initiative, ICMR-MINDS, received the prestigious Gold Award under the Innovation Category at the National Awards for e-Governance. This recognition, awarded by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, highlights the project’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence and modern technologies for citizen-centric services.

The award was presented during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) 2026 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, by Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions. Notable figures in attendance included Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore, the Minister for Information Technology and Communication of Rajasthan, along with Shri V. Srinivas, Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, and Smt. Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary of DARPG. The conference, held on July 1–2, 2026, provided a platform to celebrate advancements in e-governance across India.

ICMR-MINDS: A Cutting-Edge Mental Health Initiative

The ICMR-MINDS initiative focuses on integrating the screening and management of mental and substance use disorders with non-communicable diseases. Its innovative Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) enables trained non-specialist healthcare providers to conduct standardized mental health screenings and management, alleviating the reliance on specialists and ensuring that quality care is more accessible.

The platform provides structured digital pathways for screening and assessment, incorporates clinical guidance tailored to different roles, and features offline capabilities alongside multilingual access. Gamification elements also engage users effectively. Administrative dashboards enhance service delivery monitoring, facilitating a seamless experience for both patients and providers.

Empowering Healthcare Providers and Patients

A hallmark of the initiative is its continuity-of-care framework, designed to ensure that patients can receive ongoing care at local health facilities while allowing specialists to concentrate on more complex cases. This not only optimizes specialist resources but also enhances patient adherence to treatment and reduces the dropout rate throughout the care continuum.

The ICMR-MINDS program is implemented across seven states in partnership with leading institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati, New Delhi, Bhopal, and Bhubaneswar, the Gujarat Institute of Mental Health, St. John’s Medical College in Bengaluru, and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh.

A Commitment to Public Health

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “ICMR will continue to pioneer data-driven, scalable technology interventions to solve complex public health challenges.” He reaffirmed ICMR’s dedication to collaborating with state health systems and institutions to deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare to the Indian population.

This accomplishment owes much to the collaboration with state health departments in Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Punjab, alongside various healthcare professionals and field teams. Their combined efforts are crucial to the success and sustainability of the ICMR-MINDS initiative.
