India and Japan Partner to Enhance Energy Resilience
On July 2, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan convened in New Delhi to affirm their commitment to collaboration as responsible energy powers. In response to an increasingly complex geopolitical climate, the leaders expressed their desire to work together to bolster energy resilience in Asia.
Both nations acknowledged the significance of regional initiatives aimed at fortifying energy security. India pledged its support for energy security in South Asia, while Japan presented its Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR Asia). Following their discussions, both countries have set a roadmap for concrete initiatives in the energy sector.
Cooperation in Strategic Stockpiling
The two leaders recognized the necessity of sharing knowledge and experiences relating to strategic stockpiling systems. They plan to promote cooperation in areas such as national stockpiling mechanisms for crude oil and petroleum products. Efforts will include coordination with producing nations and strategies for emergency responses and market stabilization.
Strengthening the Voice of Energy Consumers
Modi and Takaichi reiterated the need to collectively tackle challenges associated with energy availability and affordability. They aim to enhance resilience by ensuring supply assurance and developing mechanisms to mitigate market volatility. Their cooperation will focus on sharing market trends and exploring avenues for energy supplies and investment opportunities in third countries.
Enhancing Energy Transport
Recognizing the critical role of maritime transport in energy security, both leaders are intent on fostering a resilient and efficient system for the transportation of oil and gas. They agreed to explore joint investment opportunities in maritime energy transport to strengthen the sector.
Institutional Collaboration
To deepen cooperation, the Indian and Japanese governments will promote collaboration among relevant institutions. Indian entities such as the Indian National Oil Companies and the Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited will work closely with Japanese organizations like the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
A New Platform for Dialogue
To facilitate these cooperative efforts, Modi and Takaichi established a platform for dialogue through the India-Japan Joint Working Group on Petroleum and Natural Gas. This forum will allow both nations to exchange current knowledge and explore mutual opportunities in the energy sector.
