NCP Questions the Choice of Title
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has raised concerns regarding the film’s title, arguing that a biographical drama centered on Vithabai Narayangaonkar should carry her name. According to a report by TV9 Marathi, the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department suggested that titles such as “Vitha” or “Vithabai” would be more fitting, as they would honor her significant contributions to Maharashtra’s Lavani and Tamasha traditions.
Babasaheb Patil, the Maharashtra State President of the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department, emphasized the organization’s commitment to preserving and honoring Vithabai’s legacy. He questioned the filmmakers’ decision to not name the biopic after the celebrated artist, despite her lasting impact on Maharashtra’s folk art.
Family of Vithabai Narayangaonkar Supports the Demand
The call for a title change has found support from Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family. Her sons, Kailash and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with her grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, have expressed their disappointment over the current title. They have urged the filmmakers to reconsider and rename the film in honor of Vithabai.
For the family, the issue extends beyond mere semantics. They believe that a biopic celebrating Vithabai’s extraordinary life and achievements should bear her name, ensuring that future generations recognize the woman who played a crucial role in shaping Maharashtra’s Lavani and Tamasha heritage.
As of now, director Laxman Utekar and production house Maddock Films have not issued any statement regarding the controversy or the demand to rename the film.
