BRICS Energy Ministers Unite for Sustainable Solutions in Gurugram

The 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting convened on June 25, 2026, in Gurugram, Haryana, under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This gathering brought together energy leaders from BRICS nations to discuss pressing global energy challenges and strategies for cooperation in the energy sector.
The meeting featured Energy Ministers, Vice Ministers, and senior officials, alongside representatives from key international organizations like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA). Together, they focused on enhancing collaboration among BRICS countries through shared goals and innovative strategies.
Key Discussion Areas Highlighted
Guided by the Energy Track theme “सर्वेषां ऊर्जम् (Energy for All),” discussions concentrated on three main areas:
- Energy Security and Sustainability: Emphasizing the need for resilient energy systems, diverse energy sources, and modernized grids to ensure secure and affordable energy access.
- Energy Access and Equity: Aiming for universal access to reliable and sustainable energy, including clean cooking solutions and support for developing economies.
- Technology and Innovation: Focusing on advancing digital energy systems, energy storage, hydrogen solutions, and fostering cross-border research collaborations.
Ministers reaffirmed the necessity of respecting each nation’s unique circumstances and development goals. The meeting culminated in the adoption of the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Joint Communiqué, which outlines the collective commitment to fortifying cooperation in energy security, sustainability, and innovation.
India’s Vision for Energy Transformation
Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, emphasized the critical role of energy in driving economic growth and social development. He advocated for the provision of adequate resources and policy flexibility for developing countries striving for sustainable progress. Minister Lal showcased India’s shift to a more sustainable energy landscape, highlighting its rise as the world’s third-largest electricity producer with an installed capacity nearing 540 GW.
He noted significant advancements in clean energy, particularly highlighting solar energy, which surged from about 3 GW in 2014 to over 154 GW today. Minister Lal pointed to initiatives like PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana as pivotal in promoting solar adoption and community involvement in energy transition.
Achievements Under India’s Chairship
A noteworthy outcome of the meeting was the launch of the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage. This center aims to enhance knowledge sharing and capacity building among BRICS nations within the framework of the Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP).
Ministers also approved the BRICS Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, underscoring the importance of modern power systems that facilitate renewable energy integration. Additionally, they acknowledged progress on the BRICS Joint Report on Hydrogen Value Chains 2026, laying the groundwork for collaborative advancements in hydrogen technologies.
The meeting also included a focus on increasing energy efficiency and sustainability through various side events such as discussions on Clean Coal Technologies and new Electrical Appliance Standards.
Joint Communiqué Reinforces Commitment
The Joint Communiqué reiterated energy security as central to BRICS cooperation, calling for diversified and resilient energy systems. It highlighted the necessity of secure, reliable energy as vital for economic growth, industrial development, and human dignity.
Ministers emphasized fostering balanced energy mixes and promoting innovative technologies, including renewables and energy efficiency solutions. They showed strong support for youth engagement in shaping the future of energy systems through initiatives like the upcoming BRICS Youth Energy Summit.
As India’s BRICS Chairship comes to a close, the commitment to deepening energy collaboration continues, paving the way for future cooperation under the upcoming leadership of the People’s Republic of China in 2027.
