IPC Hosts Conference to Elevate Blood Quality Standards in India
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, convened a significant National Conference on June 24, 2026, at its Ghaziabad campus. The event focused on enhancing the quality of blood and blood components in line with the new standards introduced in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) 2026. Over 160 professionals, including blood centre staff, quality assurance officers, and government health officials from multiple states, participated in discussions aimed at implementing these essential monographs.
Key Addresses Open the Conference
The inaugural session featured a virtual address by Shri Harsh Mangla, Joint Secretary for Drug and Food Regulation. He lauded IPC’s groundbreaking initiative to establish exclusive pharmacopoeial standards for blood products, which are unprecedented in other pharmacopoeias. Mangla encouraged all stakeholders to unite their efforts in ensuring the quality, safety, and availability of blood components, emphasizing their critical role in enhancing healthcare services and patient safety.
Experts Highlight Importance of New Standards
Dr. G. N. Singh, an advisor to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, also contributed to the inaugural session. The event started with a welcoming address from Dr. Jai Prakash, a Senior Principal Scientific Officer at IPC, followed by insightful remarks from Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, the Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of IPC. Dr. Kalaiselvan stressed the importance of the new standards in IP 2026 and their alignment with both national and international regulatory frameworks, reiterating their potential to significantly bolster patient safety and quality assurance in transfusion services.
Engaging Technical Discussions
Technical sessions at the conference delved into various topics, including regulatory requirements, optimal blood use, and the Haemovigilance Programme of India. A panel discussion brought together experts from diverse backgrounds, including state licensing authorities and transfusion medicine institutions, to explore strategies for implementing the newly established standards and addressing evolving regulatory expectations.
A Collaborative Step Forward
This conference not only facilitated vital knowledge sharing but also fostered a sense of collaboration among stakeholders. Participants left with a renewed commitment to adopting the IP 2026 standards, which are designed to improve the quality and efficacy of blood and blood components nationwide. The IPC aims to ensure that these new regulations are effectively instituted, further enhancing public health and patient outcomes across India.
