SAIL Supplies Special Steel for New Indian Navy Ships
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a crucial player in India’s defense industry, has officially contributed to enhancing the nation’s naval strength by supplying 5,700 tonnes of specialized steel for three newly commissioned vessels of the Indian Navy. This impressive delivery includes advanced ships: the stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the anti-submarine warfare craft INS Agray, and the survey vessel INS Sanshodhak. The commissioning ceremony for these state-of-the-art ships was held on June 21, 2026, and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata.
Specialized Steel Production
The high-quality steel provided by SAIL comprises DMR 249A grade hot-rolled sheets and plates. This defense-grade steel was expertly produced at SAIL’s notable facilities located in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela Steel Plants. The supply of this specialized metal illustrates SAIL’s robust role in bolstering India’s maritime defense infrastructure.
Commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat
SAIL’s efforts align with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, emphasizing self-reliance in defense manufacturing. By producing essential steel for naval platforms, SAIL is instrumental in India’s defense indigenization. In anticipation of the defense sector’s growing requirements, SAIL has proactively increased the production capacity of DMR Grade plates, particularly at the Special Plate Plant within the Rourkela Steel Plant. This strategic enhancement supports India’s objective to minimize dependence on imported defense-grade steel.

SAIL’s commitment to domestic production is reflected in its previous contributions, including supplying materials for the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and various Project 17A stealth frigates like INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri. Additionally, SAIL’s specialized steel serves as the backbone for numerous formidable vessels, including INS Ajay, INS Nistar, and INS Anjadeep.
