Ambassador Greer Advances U.S.-India Trade Talks in New Delhi
In a significant move to enhance economic ties, United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer visited New Delhi from June 22 to 24, 2026. Leading an official U.S. delegation, Ambassador Greer’s trip aimed to push forward the negotiations on a balanced and mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), along with finalizing an interim deal following a joint statement made earlier in the year.
During his visit, Ambassador Greer engaged in several rounds of discussions with Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal. Their meetings yielded an exhaustive review of crucial components of the proposed BTA, focusing on key areas such as enhanced market access, advancements in digital trade, supply chain resilience, the reduction of non-tariff barriers, and increased collaboration in strategic sectors.
Both leaders acknowledged the substantial progress made by the negotiating teams in recent weeks and welcomed the positive momentum stemming from ongoing technical and ministerial discussions. The conversations specifically centered on pathways to finalize an interim agreement, which would be a major milestone in achieving a comprehensive BTA. Both parties reiterated their commitment to crafting an agreement that is balanced, commercially advantageous, and brings real benefits to businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers across both nations.
As the India-U.S. economic partnership continues to grow one must recognize its increasing importance in the context of changing global trade dynamics. Both sides expressed their aspiration to expand bilateral trade, boost innovation, and develop resilient and trusted supply chains.
Ambassador Greer and Minister Goyal expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations will fortify economic relations and enhance the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. This visit reflects both nations’ dedication to creating a positive trade environment that fosters growth and collaboration.
