NHAI Launches Major Initiative to Enhance Road Safety
In a significant move to bolster road safety and ensure smooth traffic flow on National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is ramping up its efforts to eliminate unauthorized parking and encroachments along highway corridors nationwide. This initiative aligns with directives from the Hon’ble Supreme Court and showcases NHAI’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer and more efficient highway infrastructure for all users.
Unauthorized parking and roadside encroachments present serious dangers to motorists, disrupting traffic and jeopardizing safety. To tackle these issues, NHAI has pinpointed 595 strategic locations, complete with longitude and latitude coordinates, where unauthorized parking has been identified. The authority is collaborating closely with state governments, district administrations, and enforcement agencies to swiftly remove these obstructions from the highways.
Strengthening Legal Measures and Coordination
Additionally, NHAI is stepping up efforts to eradicate encroachments from National Highway corridors, adhering to the provisions outlined in the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002. To enhance institutional cooperation, the authority is partnering with state governments to set up District Highway Safety Task Forces. These task forces will help monitor compliance and facilitate coordination among various agencies, ensuring prompt enforcement actions and continuous oversight of safety-related matters along the highway network.
Upgrading Traffic Management Systems
NHAI is also mandating its field offices to conduct immediate audits of all Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) installations. This includes ensuring that vital components—such as Traffic Monitoring Cameras, Video Incident Detection Systems, Variable Speed Detection Systems, Variable Message Signboards, and Emergency Call Boxes—are fully functional. Moreover, the authority is prioritizing the deployment of ambulances and recovery vehicles, increased highway patrols, integration of ATMS alerts with enforcement agencies, and proactive maintenance of safety infrastructure to enable faster incident responses and enhanced travel safety for users of the National Highways.
This comprehensive initiative reflects NHAI’s dedication to developing safer National Highways and strengthening enforcement to ensure seamless movement for both passenger and freight transport across the country.
