India Secures Fertilizer Supply with Key Shipments Arrivals
In a major boost to its fertilizer security, India has successfully received four cargo ships carrying essential shipments of Urea, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), and Sulphur after they navigated through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite facing global trade hurdles, these vessels are en route to various ports across the country, including Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra. Once they arrive, these crucial imports will be offloaded to enhance the nation’s fertilizer supply, ensuring farmers have the necessary resources for their agricultural needs.
Strong Inventory Levels
As of June 22, 2026, India’s total fertilizer stock stands at a sturdy 196.08 Lakh Tons, a significant rise from 168.67 Lakh Tons during the same period last year. The current inventory includes:
- Urea: 81.44 Lakh Tons (up from 69.21 Lakh Tons last year)
- DAP: 20.92 Lakh Tons (up from 16.0 Lakh Tons last year)
- NPKs: 55.91 Lakh Tons (up from 46.13 Lakh Tons last year)
- MOP: 12.68 Lakh Tons (up from 10.68 Lakh Tons last year)
- SSP: 25.13 Lakh Tons (down from 26.65 Lakh Tons last year)
This robust stockpile supports a strong agricultural momentum, shown by fertilizer sales which reached 153.4 Lakh Tons from March 1, 2026, to June 21, 2026. This marks an increase of 13.2 Lakh Tons compared to 140.2 Lakh Tons sold during the same timeframe last year, with sales comprising 79.1 Lakh Tons of Urea, 34.8 Lakh Tons of NPKs, and 19.8 Lakh Tons of DAP.
Boosting Domestic Production
To safeguard local farmers from the volatility of the global market, the government has prioritized enhancing domestic fertilizer production alongside strategic imports. Domestic output has surged to 133.12 LMT, complemented by 43.69 LMT of imports received at Indian ports during the same period. This dual approach has effectively balanced local manufacturing with international sourcing.
Global Procurement Success
India achieved a significant milestone in its latest global tender, securing 17.70 LMT of Urea. This brings the total Urea and P&K fertilizers procured for the ongoing Kharif season to over 90 LMT. This comprehensive strategy involved collaboration with 28 Indian missions worldwide to create diverse import channels, ensuring a steady supply.
The Urea shipments are sourced from various countries, including Oman, Malaysia, and Russia, while DAP and NPK fertilizers have been procured from regions such as the USA and Morocco. The Department of Fertilizers remains committed to collaborating with state governments and distribution networks to maintain India’s stable and secure fertilizer framework.
