Assam and Digital India Partner for Multilingual Digital Inclusion

The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), a key entity under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has joined forces with the Assam Innovation & Startup Foundation (AISF) to foster advancements in language technology and artificial intelligence. This partnership aims to enhance digital accessibility in vernacular languages and promote innovation across Assam’s startup ecosystem.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DIBD and AISF emphasizes collaboration in developing multilingual digital solutions, artificial intelligence applications, and governance in regional languages. By tethering technologies to Indian languages, the initiative seeks to make digital services more accessible to the diverse linguistic communities of Assam.

Transforming Assam’s Digital Landscape

Through the BHASHINI Rajyam initiative, DIBD and AISF will work together to provide multilingual access to AISF’s digital platforms and services, employing BHASHINI technologies. This includes integrating language translation APIs into government services and enhancing translation capabilities for Assamese and other local dialects.

This collaboration is set to invigorate Assam’s startup and innovation ecosystem. It will empower local startups, entrepreneurs, researchers, and academic institutions to utilize BHASHINI’s language technology to create innovative AI-driven solutions tailored to local needs. The focus is on real-world application and deployment of language technologies across various sectors, offering rich opportunities for those wanting to create region-specific AI solutions.

Enhancing Language Technologies

An important aspect of this partnership is the feedback-driven improvement of language AI models, which will help enrich linguistic datasets. DIBD plans to deliver AI-based translation services on governmental platforms, ensuring that translation models reflect the many dialects and nuances specific to Assam. By continually refining these models through machine learning and user input, the project will enhance the efficiency and inclusiveness of digital language services.

Meanwhile, AISF is set to identify local language needs, prioritize languages for translation efforts, and foster collaboration within the innovation ecosystem. By actively engaging startups, researchers, and innovators, AISF aims to boost feedback mechanisms that drive the adoption of language technology.

Commitment to Inclusivity

This partnership embody a shared ethos of facilitating greater access to digital technologies that resonate with the rich linguistic diversity of Assam. Both organizations are committed to creating solutions that are inclusive and responsive to the digital needs of its citizens. They will also conduct joint activities in research, innovation, and ecosystem engagement to promote language technology initiatives that significantly enhance the local digital landscape.

Shri Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, expressed that the initiative’s core vision is to eliminate language barriers in India’s digital transformation. By collaborating with AISF, he highlights the goal of empowering local entrepreneurs to develop impactful, multilingual AI solutions that meet the specific needs of Assam.

The newly formed partnership not only reflects a commitment to leveraging technology across sectors but also aims to enrich the digital landscape, making India’s transition to a more inclusive and language-sensitive future a tangible reality.
