Indian Navy to Welcome Three New Vessels in 2026

The Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of three indigenously built frontline vessels – Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, and Agray – on June 21, 2026, in Kolkata. This significant event will be graced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, marking a milestone in India’s naval advancement.
These vessels, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, embody essential capabilities within maritime combat, hydrographic surveying, and anti-submarine warfare. Together, they reflect the Navy’s strategic approach to enhancing operational effectiveness, fostering blue-water operations, and reinforcing maritime domain awareness to safeguard coastal waters against emerging threats.
Dunagiri: The Stealth Frigate
Dunagiri serves as the fifth stealth frigate under Project 17A, armed with cutting-edge weapons and sensor systems. Notably, it is equipped with BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile system, both contributing significantly to the Navy’s combat readiness.
Sanshodhak: The Survey Vessel
As the fourth Survey Vessel (Large), Sanshodhak is designed for both coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys. It will collect crucial oceanographic and geophysical data for defense and civilian purposes. The vessel includes advanced survey systems such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Remotely Operated Vehicles, enhancing its operational scope.
Agray: The Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft
Agray is the fourth vessel in the Arnala-class series specializing in anti-submarine warfare. This shallow water craft is outfitted with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and shallow-water sonar systems, enabling it to effectively detect and engage underwater threats in coastal regions.
The commissioning of these three platforms marks a significant achievement for India’s shipbuilding industry, with indigenous content exceeding 75 percent. Their construction involved collaboration with over 200 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), contributing to substantial employment opportunities.
This event highlights the combined efforts of the Government of India, the Indian Navy, public sector shipyards, and private industries in promoting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, fostering self-reliance, and advancing India’s maritime prowess.
