Bihar Students Experience Punjab’s Rich Culture in Yuva Sangam
A delegation of students from Bihar recently completed an enriching educational tour of Punjab, concluding their visit on June 13, 2026, as part of the Yuva Sangam Phase VI programme. Organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna and hosted by IIT Ropar, the initiative aimed to immerse participants in the region’s vibrant culture and heritage.
During their visit, the students had the unique opportunity to meet with Punjab’s Governor, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, at Lok Bhavan in Chandigarh on June 10. The Governor urged the young delegates to celebrate India’s cultural diversity and take active roles in nation-building. In his address, he emphasized the significant impact of youth participation in shaping India’s future and nurturing national unity, providing valuable perspectives on leadership and civic responsibility.
Exploring Punjab’s Heritage and Urban Planning
The student delegation embarked on several excursions that showcased Punjab’s historical charm and modern advancements. Among the highlights was a visit to the serene Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, a landmark that exemplifies the city’s well-planned integration of natural landscapes and urban spaces. Participants noted the importance of effective urban planning and public spaces in fostering sustainable community development.
Another significant stop on their itinerary was the Harappan archaeological site in Ropar, located beside the Sutlej River. This visit offered students a glimpse into India’s ancient civilization, broadening their awareness of the country’s archaeological heritage. They also toured the ancestral home of revolutionary Bhagat Singh, deepening their appreciation for India’s historical narratives.
Experiential Learning and Cultural Exchange
As part of the experiential learning aspect of the Yuva Sangam programme, the students explored the bustling Sector 17 Plaza in Chandigarh, among other urban sites. This experience allowed them to engage with the principles behind India’s first planned city, gaining insight into urban design’s role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
The Yuva Sangam Phase VI initiative, launched by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, aims to foster national integration and strengthen connections among the youth across 22 paired States and Union Territories. By participating in this programme, the students not only appreciated India’s rich diversity but also played a role in enhancing its unity.
