Kochi Hosts AI Consultation for IT Industry Transformation
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, held an important Industry Consultation in Kochi, Kerala focused on the theme of ‘Supporting AI Transformation of IT Services Industry’. Chaired by Shri S Krishnan, IAS, the Secretary of MeitY, the consultation was organized by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Kochi, and brought together key stakeholders from government and industry.
Government representatives from MeitY and the Government of Kerala, alongside industry leaders, converged to address the existing challenges faced by the IT services sector and explore government support essential for transitioning into an AI-driven environment. This initiative aims to transform India’s IT services industry into a dynamic AI services sector, in line with the growing global demand for artificial intelligence solutions.
India’s IT industry stands as a global powerhouse, contributing approximately USD 246 billion in annual exports and employing around 6 million professionals. As generative AI technologies gain momentum, companies are increasingly adopting these tools to enhance productivity and optimize costs. Concurrently, there is a noticeable shift in client expectations, moving from mere process management to comprehensive transformation solutions. This evolution is prompting the industry to focus on acquiring new skills and redefining job roles across sectors such as banking, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail.
Key Areas of Focus
During the consultation, several critical topics were highlighted, including:
- The adaptation of the IT Services industry to AI-driven changes in service delivery and client expectations.
- The urgent need for extensive upskilling and reskilling of the IT/BPM workforce in AI and digital technologies to retain global competitiveness.
- Investment strategies focused on AI, Generative AI, automation, analytics, and the development of AI-powered products.
- The expansion of IT/BPM operations into emerging IT hubs to enhance employment opportunities and foster regional balance.
The meeting aimed to assess current efforts in reskilling, talent development, and technological advancement within the sector, while also identifying ways in which the government could facilitate this transformative journey.
Shri S Krishnan emphasized the necessity of developing a skilled workforce to support AI application deployment, suggesting, “The development and deployment of AI applications will require a large number of trained human resources. That is what India has to offer to the world. The focus must shift from concerns about job loss to investing in reskilling, upskilling, talent development and technological upgradation.” This statement encapsulates the commitment to nurture a talent-rich environment suited for the future.
Alignment with National Initiatives
The consultation aligns with the IndiaAI Mission, which was approved by the Cabinet in March 2024, and supports ongoing initiatives under IndiaAI Application Development and IndiaAI Futureskills Initiatives. Attendees included senior officials such as Shri K K Singh, Joint Secretary at MeitY, the IT Secretary from the Government of Kerala, and various leaders from the IT industry.
