India’s Agricultural Future: A Path to Development by 2047
In a significant address at the National Conference on “Sustainable Agriculture for Viksit Bharat@2047”, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla highlighted the crucial role that agriculture plays in India’s aspiration to become a developed nation by 2047. The conference, taking place in New Delhi, was organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Shri Birla emphasized that sustainable agriculture, paired with innovation and traditional knowledge, is essential for realizing a prosperous and developed India. He noted that the nation’s farming landscape is not merely an economic sector but is deeply rooted in its culture, civilization, and daily life. “Our villages represent the true strength of India; our farmers are the backbone that supports both our economy and our social structure,” he stated.
Addressing the challenges posed by climate change and a rapidly shifting global landscape, Shri Birla called for a shift towards science-driven, research-backed agricultural practices. He voiced the necessity of marrying traditional wisdom with cutting-edge technology to create a robust, sustainable, and profitable agricultural ecosystem. Innovations such as drones, artificial intelligence, and data analytics are making agriculture more precise and productive, he added.
Furthermore, Shri Birla delineated upcoming agricultural revolutions that hinge on expanding agro-based industries, food processing units, and agri-startups. He recognized agricultural universities, research institutions, and innovators as pivotal to shaping the future of Indian agriculture. The aim is to enhance rural development and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
The speaker also raised awareness about environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of water conservation, effective micro-irrigation systems, soil health management, high-quality seeds, and climate-resilient crops. He commended the ongoing initiatives by ICAR and the scientific community aimed at bolstering agricultural productivity.
Shri Birla expressed optimism about the role of youth, women’s leadership, and grassroots innovation in fueling the rural economy. He urged various stakeholders, including educators, scientists, and policymakers, to collaborate in developing self-sufficient agricultural models that assure long-term prosperity.
