NIUA Celebrates 50 Years of Urban Development Innovation

The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) celebrated its 50th anniversary today at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, emphasizing integrated and sustainable urban development. The golden jubilee event took place under the theme ‘Resilient Urban India @2047’ and gathered over 1,000 participants, both online and in person, including national and international delegates, senior government officials, and urban practitioners.

Honoring Five Decades of Progress

As the Chief Guest, Dr. P. K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, acknowledged NIUA’s significant contributions to the urban sector over the past five decades. He highlighted the necessity of proactive planning in urban development amidst growing climate-related challenges, advocating for nature-based solutions and sustainable infrastructure.

Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, also praised NIUA’s role in guiding India towards its vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He stressed the importance of resilience and sustainability in urban planning.

Exhibiting Achievements and Future Directions

The event featured an exhibition showcasing key milestones and contributions of NIUA since its inception in 1976. This display highlighted landmark studies, policy frameworks, and capacity-building initiatives that have shaped urban development in India.

Additionally, the celebration included the launch of several key publications aimed at enhancing urban resilience. These publications provide essential strategies for future-ready urban development in areas such as housing, water, and transportation.

Fostering New Initiatives

Among the new initiatives announced was the National Urban Learning Platform, designed to enhance technical capacity in urban governance through an integrated learning approach. The ceremony also recognized 127 students who graduated from the Urban Renaissance Tech Programme, which focuses on technology-driven urban governance.

Sessions on Urban Resilience

The celebratory event hosted nine technical sessions addressing vital aspects of urban resilience and sustainability. Topics included climate-responsive urban planning, new construction technologies, and the role of livelihoods in strengthening economic resilience.

Discussions on urban finance underscored the significance of public-private partnerships and innovative financial mechanisms, such as green bonds, to support urban local bodies moving forward. The sessions emphasized a collaborative approach to address the multifaceted challenges cities face today.

A Vision for the Future

As NIUA embarks on the next phase of its journey, the golden jubilee celebrations recognized its lasting impact on urban research, policy formulation, and capacity building.
