Nagpur’s Green Transformation: 2.5 Million Trees to be Planted

Nagpur is set to embark on a significant environmental initiative as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, announced plans to plant 2.5 million trees throughout the city and its surrounding districts. The campaign, titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” aims to enhance Nagpur’s green credentials by distributing saplings 2 to 3 meters in height to schools, universities, and other organizations, inviting broad participation in this large-scale planting effort.

At a press conference in Nagpur, Gadkari outlined the achievements and developmental projects undertaken by the Central Government over the past 12 years. He was accompanied by Maharashtra Revenue Minister and local Guardian Minister, Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule, along with other representatives.

Shri Gadkari also highlighted ongoing efforts to monitor and document the environmental impact across Maharashtra. Collaborating with the Revenue and Forest Departments and utilizing data from the Remote Sensing Centre in Nagpur, officials plan to conduct mapping across all districts and talukas. Districts that excel in plantation efforts will be publicly recognized for their environmental contributions.

Reviewing the Central Government’s welfare initiatives, he stated that over 58 crore bank accounts have been opened through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Furthermore, the Ayushman Bharat scheme has served 60 crore citizens, and the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has provided 11 crore LPG connections. Additionally, approximately 11 crore farmers now receive annual financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

Infrastructure and Employment Initiatives

Addressing employment generation, Gadkari noted that under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, around ₹35 lakh crore in loans have been disbursed to 57 crore beneficiaries, supporting small entrepreneurs and street vendors. He also lauded the Startup India initiative, which has successfully launched 1.6 lakh startups and 118 unicorns, while the Skill India Mission has trained approximately 5 crore youth over the last decade.

In terms of local development, prominent market modernization projects such as the Cotton Market Redevelopment and several others are currently in progress. The city is also seeing advancements in public transportation, with Phase II of the Nagpur Metro moving forward and a Detailed Project Report for Phase III already complete.

Future Transport Developments

Shri Gadkari outlined some exciting transportation projects that are set to bolster connectivity, including the Nagpur–Hyderabad Expressway, which will significantly reduce travel time between the two cities to roughly three and a half hours. He also mentioned the Indora–Dighori flyover project, nearing its completion and expected to open to traffic by August 1, 2026.

In conjunction with these developments, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is establishing Driving Training Centres nationwide, with plans for 1,600 facilities. Currently, 24 are operational, and as these centres open, they aim to train around 10 lakh individuals annually, bolstering employment opportunities across the country.
