CSIR-NIScPR Hosts Successful Training on Koha Software
The CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) recently wrapped up an insightful three-day offline Skill Training Programme on the “Basics of Koha Software.” The event took place from June 10 to June 12, 2026, at the Institute’s campus in Satsang Vihar, New Delhi, and was aimed at enhancing professional skills in open-source library automation.
Designed by the Training Division of CSIR-NIScPR, the program attracted 33 participants representing various academic, research, and library institutions from across the nation. Participants engaged in a comprehensive training experience focused on Koha – a renowned global open-source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS).
Inaugural Sessions and Objectives
At the opening session on June 10, Ms. Meetali Bharti, the Nodal Principal Investigator, welcomed the attendees and delineated the objectives of the training. She underscored the significance of developing skills in contemporary digital library technologies. Mr. Mukesh A. Pund, Chief Scientist and Head of the Training Division, further articulated the training goals and discussed the pressing need for library automation skills. He highlighted how tools like Koha can significantly boost operational efficiency and improve information resource accessibility. Insights into the impact of open-source technologies on library automation and knowledge management were shared by Mr. C.B. Singh, another Chief Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR.
Workshop Details and Practical Training
Throughout the three days, participants acquired both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The curriculum included vital topics such as the fundamentals of open-source software, Koha’s architecture, Linux installation, deployment, and administration. Participants learned about catalog management, patron management, circulation processes, and report generation. With a hands-on approach, attendees practiced configuring Koha and managing bibliographic records, circulation workflows, and customized report generation.
Technical sessions led by Ms. Meetali Bharti, Mr. Salim Ansari, and Mr. Mukesh A. Pund provided in-depth insights into effectively deploying and utilizing Koha in academic and research environments. This practical training equipped participants with skills directly applicable to modern library management challenges.
Valedictory Session Highlights
The training program culminated on June 12 with a valedictory session featuring Dr. Naresh Kumar, a Chief Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR, who addressed the attendees and acknowledged their efforts. He highlighted the essential role of digital library systems and open-source solutions in advancing knowledge management.
CSIR-NIScPR’s commitment to fostering professional excellence in library and information services was evident throughout this training initiative. By promoting open-source technologies, the institute continues to support the digital transformation of libraries and knowledge institutions across India.
