Truncale Highlights India’s Key Role in EY’s AI Strategy
BENGALURU: EY’s India operations are becoming increasingly vital to the firm’s global AI strategy, according to Janet Truncale, the global chair and CEO of EY. With over 100,000 of its 400,000 employees based in India, the workforce is recognized for its rapid adoption of new technologies. Truncale emphasized this significance during the launch of the EY.ai Centre for Reimagination in Bengaluru, which aims to facilitate the transition from isolated AI projects to comprehensive business transformations. This initiative is part of EY’s planned $1.4 billion investment in AI.
Truncale explained that the decision to establish the centre in India was intentional. She noted that the local workforce’s understanding of technology is unparalleled, attributing this to India’s status as a tech hub and an innovation center for EY. The centre is designed to demonstrate the potential of AI across various sectors, including retail, banking, manufacturing, healthcare, and life sciences. It aims to help clients visualize how AI can transform their business and operating models as well as enhance customer experiences.
In her discussion, Truncale highlighted EY’s commitment to using its own operations as a testing ground for AI applications. The firm has developed a global audit platform called Canvas, which serves over 160,000 clients and more than 100,000 audit professionals. The integration of agentic AI into this platform represents a significant advancement, enabling real-time guidance for auditors. Similar enhancements are being made in tax services, where EY’s knowledge catalogue has been adapted by country.
Despite the growing influence of AI on the workforce, Truncale stated that the demand for junior talent remains strong. She emphasized the importance of bringing in new skills and perspectives from recent graduates. Truncale also pointed out that the challenge lies in accelerating the development of these new hires to operate at higher levels, rather than relegating them to menial tasks. Ajay Anand, managing partner for EY Global Delivery Services, noted that the firm hired 25,000 people in the past year, many of whom were sourced from college campuses. Truncale added that boards are increasingly interested in leveraging real and synthetic data for decision-making and managing AI agents alongside human workers.
