Bondi Beach Shooting Suspect Faces Additional 19 Charges
The man charged with the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of fifteen individuals during a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach in Sydney has been hit with 19 additional charges. Naveed Akram, already facing a total of 59 charges, including multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, now faces new allegations related to his actions during the attack. The recent charges, confirmed by authorities, add further complexity to an already serious case that has drawn national attention.
New Charges Filed
Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with ten counts of “shoot at with intent to murder,” six counts of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, and three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. These new charges were filed in April but have only recently been confirmed by the authorities. Akram is currently facing a total of 59 charges, which include 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one count of committing a terrorist act. He has made several brief court appearances but has yet to enter a plea regarding these charges. His next court date is scheduled for August.
Evidence Collection Progressing
During a recent court session, prosecutors informed the judge that investigators from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team are making steady progress in reviewing the evidence related to the case. This evidence includes a staggering 230,000 CCTV images and data from various devices belonging to individuals with alleged connections to Akram. The prosecutors noted that much of this material requires translation, indicating the complexity and scale of the investigation. Akram’s lawyer, Leonie Gittani, stated that the additional charges were anticipated and part of the legal process in such a significant case.
Details of the Attack
The attack on Bondi Beach, which occurred on December 14, 2025, is considered Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly three decades. Court documents released in late December revealed that Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, had meticulously planned the assault for months. They reportedly conducted reconnaissance at the site just two days before the attack. Video evidence from their mobile phones showed the pair discussing their motivations for the attack while in front of an image of an Islamic State flag. Additionally, footage captured earlier showed them engaging in firearms training, further illustrating the premeditated nature of their actions.
Impact and Reforms
The horrific incident has prompted significant changes in Australian law, including sweeping reforms to gun legislation and a crackdown on hate speech. The government has initiated a royal commission into antisemitism in Australia, which began public hearings in February. The attack has raised serious concerns about public safety and the need for stronger measures to combat hate-driven violence. As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains a focal point for discussions about security and community relations in Australia.
