Empowering Mothers: PMMVY Transforms Maternal Health in India

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) is reinforcing its dedication to maternal health and early childhood care with the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). Launched in 2017, this flagship maternity benefit scheme focuses on providing crucial financial support to Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM), thereby fostering healthier behaviors and better nutrition during critical stages of motherhood.

Streamlined Support for Mothers

Since being integrated into Mission Shakti on April 1, 2022, PMMVY has evolved its offerings by reducing the number of instalments from three to two. Additionally, maternity benefits are now available for the second child if it is a girl, ensuring broader support for families.

Eligible mothers receive ₹5,000 in two instalments for the first living child and ₹6,000 for the second child, contingent upon the child being a girl. These financial benefits are linked to essential maternal and child health milestones, such as early pregnancy registration, antenatal care, and immunization, actively promoting better health practices.

Direct Financial Assistance

The scheme utilizes the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, which guarantees timely and transparent financial support delivered directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts. Furthermore, provisions for new eligibility have been established in instances of miscarriage or stillbirth, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity. This financial support acts as partial wage compensation, enabling mothers to take necessary time off for rest before and after childbirth.

Proven Impact Across India

Since its launch, PMMVY has made a significant impact, with over 4.27 crore beneficiaries receiving aid as of April 30, 2026. A total of ₹20,150 crore has been disbursed, underscoring the scale of support brought to mothers across the nation.

The real stories of beneficiaries highlight the program’s significance. Women facing financial hardships have found relief through PMMVY, receiving timely support to access nutritious food, consistent antenatal check-ups, and vital medical care without the added stress of financial burdens. This enablement has resulted in safe deliveries at healthcare facilities, showcasing the scheme’s essential role in promoting safe motherhood and enhancing maternal health outcomes.

Commitment to Empowerment

PMMVY has significantly contributed to boosting maternal well-being, promoting institutional deliveries, and enhancing gender equity through incentives aimed at the girl child. The Ministry of Women and Child Development is dedicated to further improving the scheme’s implementation and outreach, ensuring that every eligible woman receives the support she needs, aligned with the vision of a healthier and more empowered India.
