World Bicycle Day 2026: A Ride for Health and Sustainability

On June 3, 2026, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, led a cycling event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, celebrating World Bicycle Day. Joined by approximately 30 officers and staff from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, along with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Dr. Mandaviya underscored the significance of cycling in promoting fitness and environmental stewardship.

The event was also attended by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse. Participants completed a full lap around the stadium, emphasizing fitness, sustainability, and a collective responsibility towards the environment.

In his message to the public, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted that cycling transcends mere recreation. “Cycling is not merely an exercise or a hobby; it is a symbol of a healthy and empowered lifestyle. It should become a daily habit because it keeps us fit, protects the environment, reduces pollution, and contributes to building a Fit, Healthy, and Viksit Bharat,” he stated.

This year’s World Bicycle Day theme, “Cycling for a Greener Future,” promotes bicycles as a vital means to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, encouraging healthier mobility choices. The day’s activities aligned with the ongoing Fit India Movement and the increasing popularity of ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle,’ which promotes cycling as a routine fitness activity.

Dr. Mandaviya also pointed out that cycling can lessen the reliance on fossil fuel-powered vehicles, leading to cleaner air and improved public health. He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for citizens to decrease their dependence on petrol and diesel, proposing cycling as a viable and positive solution.

Continuing the enthusiasm from World Bicycle Day, a nationwide edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle is planned for the upcoming Sunday. This event will gather cyclists, athletes, youth volunteers, and fitness enthusiasts from various locations across India. Dr. Mandaviya urged young people to participate actively and register through the Fit India App, encouraging friends and family to join the movement.

In addition to promoting cycling, India is set to host the World Yogasana Sport Championship 2026 from June 4 to 8 at the Eka Arena in Ahmedabad. Over 500 athletes from more than 70 countries are expected to participate, marking a significant milestone in India’s mission to globalize fitness. Just as ‘Sundays on Cycle’ promotes community involvement and well-being, the Yogasana championship aims to enhance India’s reputation in sports and supports its aspirations for future inclusion in multi-sport events like the Olympics.
