Tragic Delhi Fire Claims Lives of Foreign Nationals Among 21 Victims

At least 21 people have lost their lives and numerous others have sustained injuries following a devastating fire in a multi-storey building in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. The incident, which occurred early in the morning, primarily affected foreign nationals from South Asian countries who were in India for medical treatment or to support relatives receiving care. The building reportedly functioned as a bed-and-breakfast for patients and their families visiting a nearby private hospital.
Fire Incident Details
The fire broke out around 8:50 AM, rapidly engulfing the building and trapping many individuals on the upper floors. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as people attempted to escape. Some residents even spread mattresses on the ground to cushion the fall of those who jumped from the second and third floors. Local resident Wasim Raj recounted the urgency of the situation, stating that they quickly laid out mattresses to help those fleeing the flames. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control, but not before it caused significant damage and loss of life.
Victims and Rescue Operations
Among the deceased, many were identified as foreign nationals, particularly from Bangladesh and other South Asian nations. They had traveled to Delhi for medical purposes, either for their own treatment or to accompany family members. More than 40 individuals were rescued and transported to hospitals for treatment. The exact number of people present in the building at the time of the fire remains uncertain. Rescue operations continued throughout the day as emergency crews searched for any remaining individuals trapped inside.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Delhi authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the building had the necessary permits to operate as a bed-and-breakfast. Local minister Ashish Sood stated that those responsible for any violations would face legal consequences. The incident has raised serious concerns about building safety regulations in India, where enforcement is often lax. Past investigations into similar fires have highlighted issues such as inadequate inspections and faulty electrical systems, leading to tragic outcomes.
Government Response and Public Reaction
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and announced compensation of 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,088) for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for those injured. Videos circulating on social media captured the intensity of the fire, with flames shooting from the building as bystanders looked on. The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stricter safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future, as fires in Delhi have frequently exposed the gap between safety laws and their actual implementation.
