New SMC Guidelines Launched to Enhance School Management in India

In a significant step towards improving education in India, Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, unveiled the School Management Committee (SMC) Guidelines 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The launch was attended by prominent officials, including Shri Ashish Sood, Education Minister of Delhi, and Shri Gajender Yadav, Minister of School Education in Chhattisgarh, among others.

During the event, Shri Pradhan emphasized that the new guidelines will serve as a crucial mechanism to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in nearly 1.5 million schools across the nation. He described SMCs as essential links connecting students, teachers, parents, and communities, aimed at fostering holistic development through active community engagement and shared accountability in educational pursuits.

Community Participation at the Heart of Education

Shri Pradhan highlighted the government’s commitment not only to education but also to the health and well-being of children, particularly those with special needs. He stated that the SMC Guidelines will enhance support systems, mentoring, and a sense of ownership within the communities, transforming them into a movement focused on educational reform. The Minister noted the historical significance of community-led initiatives like Vidyanjali, which underscore the importance of local involvement in schools.

A Transformational Shift in Education

In his address, Shri Ashish Sood expressed that the SMC Guidelines represent a pivotal shift in India’s educational framework. He pointed out that previous SMC regulations primarily addressed administrative tasks such as grant monitoring and infrastructure oversight. However, with today’s evolving social challenges, issues like child safety, mental health, foundational literacy, and community participation have become paramount. The revised SMC Guidelines are structured to address these critical areas, transforming SMCs from mere oversight bodies into dynamic educational governing institutions. These bodies will now focus on aspects such as student welfare, inclusivity, and digital transparency.

Building Bridges Between Schools and Communities

Shri Gajender Yadav reiterated the role of active societal involvement in improving educational outcomes. He conveyed that the newly launched SMC Guidelines would facilitate a stronger connection between parents and schools, promoting higher engagement from local guardians in school governance.

The launch meeting also saw participation from various state education ministers, who attended virtually, including representatives from Haryana, Maharashtra, and Mizoram, underscoring a collective effort towards enhancing the educational landscape across the country.
