India Advances Semiconductor Manufacturing with New Projects
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, recently approved two significant semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). These initiatives will establish the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility utilizing Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology and a dedicated semiconductor packaging plant in Gujarat. With a planned investment of approximately Rs. 3,936 crore, these developments are projected to create around 2,230 skilled job opportunities.
Details of the Semiconductor Projects
The first project, led by Crystal Matrix Limited (CML), will create an integrated facility for compound semiconductor fabrication and assembly, test, mark, and package (ATMP) in Dholera, Gujarat. This facility is designed to manufacture Mini/Micro-LED display modules, offering GaN foundry services, including epitaxy on 6-inch wafers. CML’s facility anticipates an annual production capacity of 72,000 square meters for Mini/Micro-LED Display Panels and 24,000 sets of RGB wafers for GaN epitaxy.
These Mini/Micro-LED products will have various applications, including large displays for televisions and commercial signage, medium-sized displays for tablets and smartphones, and micro-displays for extended reality (XR) devices and smartwatches.
Support for Discrete Semiconductor Manufacturing
The second project by Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) will set up an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Surat, Gujarat. This facility is poised to manufacture discrete semiconductors, with a production capacity of 1,033.20 million chips annually. The target applications for these chips include power electronics, analog integrated circuits, and various industrial systems, catering to markets such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation.
Boosting India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem
The approval of these projects marks a substantial boost for India’s semiconductor ecosystem, bringing the total number of approved projects under ISM to 12, amounting to cumulative investments of about Rs. 1.64 lakh crore. This expansion complements the growing chip design capabilities in the country, fueled by supportive infrastructure provided to 315 academic institutions and 104 startups.
Currently, momentum is building within the semiconductor sector in India, with ten projects already underway. Two of these projects have begun shipping commercially, while two more are expected to start operations shortly, showcasing the rapid evolution of India’s position in the global semiconductor landscape.
