Indian Railways Expands Network with Three Major Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has greenlit three significant railway projects worth approximately Rs. 23,437 crore. These developments include the Nagda – Mathura 3rd and 4th Line, Guntakal – Wadi 3rd and 4th Line, and Burhwal – Sitapur 3rd and 4th Line. This expansion is set to strengthen the framework of Indian Railways and enhance commuter experience across multiple states.

Boosting Connectivity and Efficiency

The addition of these lines will significantly boost rail capacity, improving mobility and operational effectiveness. By implementing these multi-tracking proposals, Indian Railways aims to reduce congestion and facilitate smoother operations. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a New India, promoting self-reliance through comprehensive regional development and increased employment opportunities.

Integrated Planning and Stakeholder Engagement

These railway projects are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, designed to enhance multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency through thorough planning and stakeholder engagement. The new lines will ensure seamless transport of people and goods, solidifying the logistical backbone of the country.

Impacting Lives Across Multiple States

The three projects will cover 19 districts, impacting the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and extending the Indian Railways network by approximately 901 kilometers. With better connectivity, around 4,161 villages, home to approximately 8.3 million residents, will benefit from improved rail access.

Connecting to Tourist Destinations

The enhanced railway routes will facilitate better access to renowned tourist spots, including Mahakaleshwar, Ranthambore National Park, and several temples across the region. This connectivity is expected to boost tourism and local economies.

Enhancing Freight Transport and Environmental Benefits

Crucial for transporting commodities such as coal, food grains, and cement, the capacity increase is anticipated to yield an additional freight traffic of 60 million tonnes per annum. The environment-friendly nature of rail transport will help meet climate goals by reducing oil imports by 37 crore liters and cutting down CO2 emissions by 185 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting seven crore trees.
