Delhi Revokes Stage-I Actions as Air Quality Improves

In a positive turn of events for Delhi’s residents, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has announced the immediate revocation of Stage-I actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This decision comes as forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) predict that the air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR) will remain in the satisfactory to moderate range in the coming days.

On April 16, 2026, the CAQM initially invoked Stage-I of the GRAP due to an alarming increase in the average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi. However, recent data shows a remarkable improvement, with the daily average AQI dropping to 88 on May 4, 2026, from 175 the previous day, largely attributed to rain and favorable weather conditions, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Call for Continued Vigilance

To maintain these improved air quality levels, the CAQM is urging all relevant agencies within the NCR to diligently follow all statutory directions, advisories, and orders issued by the Commission. This entails compliance with the rules and regulations established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoE&FCC), the CPCB, and other local pollution control boards.

Moreover, all agencies in the NCR are required to adhere to the various timelines and actions outlined in the comprehensive policy aimed at reducing air pollution. Special emphasis is placed on initiatives to mitigate dust emissions, a significant contributor to poor air quality.

Monitoring Air Quality

The Sub-Committee will continue to closely monitor the air quality situation and will reassess the circumstances periodically. Future decisions will depend heavily on the AQI readings in Delhi and additional forecasts provided by IMD and IITM. This ongoing vigilance is essential to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate and remains within acceptable levels.

As Delhi’s air quality sees improvements, the collaborative efforts of various agencies will be crucial in sustaining these gains and providing healthier air for all citizens.
