Crop Sowing Areas Show Mixed Trends for 2026

The latest government data reveals mixed trends in crop sowing areas for the year 2026. While there is an overall increase in some categories, certain crops have shown a decline compared to the previous year. The summer crop area for 2026 stands at 79 lakh hectares, slightly lower than the 81.60 lakh hectares recorded in 2025.

Rice and Pulses See Varied Trends

In the rice category, the area sown for the current year is at 31.05 lakh hectares, a decline from 32.42 lakh hectares last year. This represents a decrease of 1.36 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year. In contrast, pulses have shown growth, with the current sowing area at 23.49 lakh hectares, a slight increase from 22.76 lakh hectares recorded the previous year.

Shree Anna and Coarse Cereals Fluctuate

The area dedicated to Shree Anna and coarse cereals has seen a noteworthy rise. Currently, 16.01 lakh hectares are sown compared to 14.25 lakh hectares last year, marking an increase of 1.77 lakh hectares. This category shows a promising trend, particularly with maize, which alone accounts for 10 lakh hectares this year.

Oilseed Expansion Continues

Oilseed crops have also expanded significantly, with the area sown reaching 11.04 lakh hectares, up from 9.58 lakh hectares last year, showing an increase of 1.47 lakh hectares. Groundnut has made a substantial contribution, with a sown area increasing to 5.51 lakh hectares, reflecting a rise of 1.31 lakh hectares from the previous year.

Overall Analysis

Overall, the crop sowing area for 2026 indicates fluctuations across different categories. While some key crops like rice are facing challenges, the strong performance in pulses, coarse cereals, and oilseeds suggests a diversified farming approach among cultivators. The government will continue to monitor these trends closely to support farmers and ensure food security.
