Air India Considers Unbundling Meals on Domestic and Short International Flights

New Delhi: In a bid to navigate the challenging financial landscape exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions, Air India is set to introduce optional meal services on its domestic and short international flights. This strategic move, expected to roll out in the coming months, could allow passengers to save up to Rs 250 on their ticket prices by opting out of in-flight meals. The airline is also exploring other cost-saving measures to address the financial strain caused by rising fuel prices and fluctuating currency values.

Cost-Cutting Measures in Response to Market Pressures

Air India’s decision to make meals optional is part of a broader strategy to manage rising operational costs. The airline has faced significant financial challenges, including a reported loss of Rs 24,000 crore in the last fiscal year. With the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) increasing and the Indian rupee depreciating, ticket prices have been under pressure. Industry insiders indicate that the Indian market is particularly sensitive to fare increases, prompting many travelers to consider alternative modes of transport, such as trains or buses. By unbundling meal services, Air India aims to keep ticket prices competitive while still providing options for passengers.

In addition to meal unbundling, Air India is also contemplating the separation of lounge access for business class travelers. Currently, lounge access costs between Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,400 at major airports and Rs 600 to Rs 700 at smaller airports. Many frequent flyers often arrive at the airport just in time for their flights and do not utilize lounge services. By allowing passengers to opt out of lounge access, the airline could offer lower ticket prices, appealing to cost-conscious travelers.

Global Trends in Airline Services

The trend of unbundling services is not unique to Air India; it reflects a growing global shift among airlines. Many international carriers have adopted similar strategies, offering basic meals in economy class while allowing passengers to purchase premium options at an additional cost. This approach has blurred the lines between full-service and low-cost airlines, as travelers increasingly seek flexibility in their travel experiences.

Industry experts note that the distinction between full-service and low-cost carriers is diminishing rapidly. As airlines adapt to changing consumer preferences, they are finding innovative ways to enhance revenue without compromising service quality. This trend is evident in the airline’s plans to introduce advertising on boarding passes for Air India Express flights, which could provide an additional revenue stream.

Challenges Ahead for Air India

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has had a profound impact on airlines worldwide, and Air India is no exception. The airline has been particularly affected by airspace closures, which have lengthened flight times to Europe, the UK, and North America. As a result, Air India is actively seeking new leadership to steer the company through these turbulent times.

The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has been working to secure additional funding from its promoters, Tata Sons, and Singapore Airlines to stabilize the airline’s finances. With the aviation industry facing unprecedented challenges, Air India’s efforts to adapt its service offerings may be crucial in ensuring its survival and competitiveness in the market.
