India Hosts Workshop to Bolster Critical Minerals Value Chain

New Delhi, April 28, 2026 – A pivotal workshop titled “Developing the Critical Minerals Value Chain for a Sustainable Future” convened today, uniting key stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and global institutions. The event aimed to discuss strategies for enhancing India’s critical mineral ecosystem, with a particular emphasis on secondary resources and recycling efforts.

In his keynote address, Shri Piyush Goyal, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, highlighted the importance of private sector involvement to accelerate the development of India’s critical minerals value chain. He spoke about the Government’s supportive policies under the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM), underscoring the necessity of creating a robust and self-reliant supply chain through regulatory reforms and incentives. Goyal noted that critical minerals play a vital role in India’s energy transition and technological advancements, thus calling for increased efforts in exploration, processing, and recycling.

Unlocking the Potential of Secondary Resources

The workshop revealed a significant opportunity in utilizing secondary resources, such as mine waste, tailings, slags, and industrial by-products, as feasible and economical sources of critical minerals. A particular focus was placed on urban mining, especially the recycling of electronic waste and end-of-life batteries, which aligns with the government’s incentive structures.

Expert Discussions on Scalability and Innovation

During the technical sessions, experts engaged in discussions on pivotal themes, including how to derive value from secondary sources, the role of emerging technologies and pilot initiatives, and ways to enhance the recycling framework. Notable participants from organizations like Hindalco, Rubamin, Attero, Lohum, ALTMIN, and GMDC, along with representatives from international bodies including the World Bank, shared valuable insights regarding the technological advancements, commercial practicality, and policy frameworks necessary to boost recovery efforts.

There was a strong consensus among participants regarding the importance of translating laboratory innovations into scalable industrial applications. Experts emphasized the need for conducive policy frameworks to attract private investments and encourage innovation in the critical minerals sector.

Building Collaborations for Future Growth

The workshop concluded with a united call for closer collaboration among government, industry, and academic sectors to expedite pilot projects and implement proven technologies. The event attracted an enthusiastic audience, leading to insightful discussions on critical issues surrounding the mineral value chain. The depth and relevance of the deliberations were widely acknowledged, contributing to the workshop’s success as a platform for actionable outcomes.
