Workshop Boosts AI Innovations for Pali Language Preservation
On April 10, 2026, a pivotal workshop targeting the preservation of the Pali language through artificial intelligence (AI) took place at the Faculty of Arts, University of Delhi. Organized by the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) in conjunction with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhist Studies, this event marked a significant stride towards safeguarding minority languages in India.
Emphasis on Pali’s Cultural Significance
The workshop highlighted the Pali language, an ancient Middle Indo-Aryan language that plays a vital role in early Buddhist literature, including the Tripitaka. Its historical, literary, and cultural relevance makes it a cornerstone of India’s Buddhist heritage. As a low-resource language in the realm of AI, Pali requires structured efforts for digitization, dataset creation, and linguistic validation—goals that align with the Ministry of Minority Affairs’ mission to promote and protect minority and heritage languages.
Collaboration and Innovation
The Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhist Studies provided crucial expertise, ensuring that linguistic and cultural contexts were accurately represented in AI initiatives. During the workshop, Shri Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India BHASHINI Division, emphasized the necessity of utilizing AI to foster inclusive access to knowledge systems. He urged academic institutions and language communities to engage actively in developing high-quality datasets and robust language models.
Workshop Activities and Future Plans
Participants engaged in discussions about the linguistic value of Pali, focusing on necessary datasets including text corpora, audio files, and the digitization of manuscripts. The BhashaDaan platform was introduced to facilitate structured data contributions and community validation from proficient speakers. Live demonstrations showcased core language AI technologies, including Anuvaad for text translation, Vaanianuvaad for real-time speech translation, Lekhaanuvaad for document translation, and Chitraanuvaad for video translation. The BHASHINI Mobile App was also demonstrated, providing users with instant speech recognition and translation services in various Indian languages.
Broader Implications of BHASHINI Technologies
Use cases across digital public infrastructure, governance, education, and knowledge-sharing platforms underscored the real-world applications of these technologies. BHASHINI’s capabilities were emphasized, spotlighting its potential to support multilingual access and digital empowerment across sectors. The workshop reinforced the importance of collaboration with academic institutions and community contributions for language data creation and AI innovation.
