Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya Partners with DGCA to Enhance Aviation Training

In a landmark development for India’s aviation sector, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV), the nation’s premier university for the transportation and logistics industry, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The signing took place at Rail Bhawan, featuring prominent attendees including Union Ministers Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Shri K. Ram Mohan Naidu, along with key officials from the sectors of Railways and Civil Aviation.

The strategic alliance aims to bolster the rapidly growing Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) sector by enhancing training standards for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME). Central to this initiative is the introduction of a new undergraduate degree program in Aviation Maintenance Engineering, designed to make MRO careers more attractive for India’s youth.

Focus on Center of Excellence and Industry Standards

During the event, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw proposed the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at GSV, dedicated to advanced manufacturing technologies encompassing aviation, railways, and marine sectors. He emphasized the need for precise technical training and noted that an industry-aligned educational framework is vital for preparing students for diverse career opportunities after graduation.

Vaishnaw also acknowledged that our educational programs should adhere to global benchmarks, with the potential for at least 1,000 students to benefit each year from such initiatives. He assured that necessary funding would be made available to support these ambitious educational goals.

Scaling New Heights in Aviation

Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted India’s booming aviation industry, which is growing at an impressive rate of 10-12% annually, with projections to maintain this trajectory for at least the next 15 years. Naidu pointed out the recent opening of Jewar Airport as an example of the extensive infrastructural development aimed at achieving seamless multimodal connectivity across various transportation sectors.

He remarked on how GSV’s integrated approach could reshape the logistics landscape by merging traditionally isolated sectors. By focusing on MRO, training, and domestic aircraft component manufacturing, this partnership aligns with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-sufficient growth within the aviation sector.

Collaboration for a Future-Ready Workforce

GSV has already begun forming partnerships with renowned aviation entities such as Airbus, Safran, and GMR School of Aviation, and is negotiating further collaboration with ENAC France and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. These strategic alliances are crucial for creating a robust and industry-relevant educational curriculum.

The MoU entails the collaborative design of a future-ready three-year B.Sc. (AME) program, combining academic rigor, regulatory compliance, and competencies that align with industry needs. The program aims to produce a highly skilled workforce prepared to meet the demands of India’s evolving aviation landscape.

Launching the Pilot Program

The pilot phase of the B.Sc. (AME) program is set to launch in the 2026-27 academic year at selected premier AME institutions, such as the GMR School of Aviation and Air India AME Academy. This phase will help establish a model of academic excellence before a wider national rollout.

As a pivotal collaborator, GSV will also work with DGCA as a research partner in emerging fields like Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), while also offering specialized training programs to enhance the skills of DGCA personnel.

This partnership effectively bridges the gap between regulation, academia, and industry. While DGCA continues to set licensing standards, GSV will serve as a national anchor for curriculum innovation and faculty development. This scalable approach supports India’s goal of reducing its dependence on foreign MRO facilities and strengthens indigenous maintenance capabilities.
