Indian Railways Unveils Major Upgrades for Passenger Comfort

The Indian Railways has rolled out a comprehensive plan to enhance passenger experience and manage heavy foot traffic across its stations. This initiative aims to create a more organized and comfortable environment for travelers, especially during peak hours. Key features of the plan include the establishment of permanent holding areas, improved access control, wider foot-over-bridges, and upgraded CCTV surveillance, among other critical enhancements.

Permanently Designated Holding Areas

The Ministry of Railways is set to establish passenger holding areas at 76 designated stations to alleviate crowd congestion on platforms. These holding areas will provide essential amenities including seating, drinking water, restrooms, ticketing facilities, informative displays, and security checks. The New Delhi Railway Station has already implemented this initiative, which significantly alleviates congestion and introduces conveniences such as additional ticket counters, automated ticket vending machines, electronic train information boards, and improved safety systems including CCTV surveillance and luggage scanners.

Controlled Access to Platforms

The new plan includes a complete access control system, allowing passengers with confirmed reservations direct entry to the platforms. Those without tickets or holding waiting list tickets will be accommodated in designated waiting areas, thus streamlining the crowd movement and enhancing safety.

Innovation in Infrastructure

As part of the upgrades, two new designs for foot-over-bridges (FOB) have been developed, offering widths of 12 meters (40 feet) and 6 meters (20 feet), which will be implemented at stations across the network. This expansion is expected to significantly improve pedestrian flow and accessibility.

Advanced Surveillance Systems

To ensure effective monitoring and security, a large number of AI-enabled CCTV cameras will be installed in stations and their vicinity. Additionally, war rooms will be set up at major stations, enabling coordinated efforts among various departments to manage crowd situations efficiently.

Unified Communication and Identification

New-generation communication tools, including walkie-talkies and digital announcement systems, will be deployed at crowded stations. Staff and service personnel will also benefit from redesigned QR-based ID cards for secure access, alongside distinctive uniforms to improve visibility during emergencies.

Enhanced Management Structure

To ensure a unified approach to station management, a senior officer will be assigned as the Station Director at all major stations. This official will possess financial powers to make immediate decisions regarding station improvements. Additionally, the Station Director will oversee ticket sales in line with the station’s capacity and available train services.

The updates were detailed by Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a recent parliamentary session. With these innovations and enhancements, Indian Railways aims to provide a seamless travel experience while addressing the challenges posed by a surge in passenger traffic.
