NHAI Launches Summer Internship Programme for Future Professionals

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to nurture the next generation of professionals in national highway infrastructure through its newly announced Summer Internship Programme for 2026. Scheduled between May and July 2026, this initiative expands on the successful Winter Internship Programme and the ongoing six-month internship, aiming to provide students with valuable, hands-on experience in India’s largest highway development ecosystem.

Expanded Internship Offers Diverse Disciplines

The Summer Internship Programme will tentatively run from May 4 to July 5, 2026, depending on the academic schedules of participants. This year, the program’s reach is broader than ever, incorporating various engineering and technical disciplines. These include Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Data Science/Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, the programme invites candidates from non-technical streams like Law (BA LLB), Commerce (BA/B.Com/B.Sc), Management (MBA in HR, Finance, Marketing), Mass Communication, and Library Science, thus encouraging a diverse array of applicants.

Application Details and Requirements

Under this initiative, selected interns will work at designated NHAI field offices or the NHAI Headquarters in New Delhi, with mentorship provided by experienced officials. Eligible candidates are full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students from esteemed institutions, including those ranked highly in the National Institutional Ranking Framework, leading law universities, noted management schools, and respected mass communication institutes. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000, and a certificate of completion will be awarded upon the successful conclusion of the programme. Interested students should submit their applications via the NHAI Internship Portal by April 15, 2026. Detailed information, including guidelines and application procedures, can be found on the portal.

Streamlined Application Process

The application process has officially begun on the dedicated NHAI Internship Portal, which features separate logins for students and institutions. Aspiring interns must submit their applications online, detailing their academic and personal information, while also expressing preferences for project locations whenever applicable. Educational institutions will be responsible for verifying student applications on the portal, confirming their enrolment status. Only applications approved by institutes will advance to the selection phase, while final project allocations will be made by NHAI based on candidates’ preferences and project availability.

Encouraging Participation and Collaboration

To enhance engagement between industry and academia, NHAI urges institutions to actively promote the internship programme to eligible students, encourage timely application submissions, and nominate faculty coordinators to assist throughout the process. The previous iteration of the programme, launched in December 2025, attracted strong interest, with 244 civil engineering students participating in the one-month winter internship and 149 students enrolling in the six-month term programme from January to June 2026. This expanded internship framework aims to build on that success and contribute to creating a skilled workforce in the infrastructure sector.
