Empowering Tribal Homestays: A Workshop for Growth

In a bid to boost the tribal homestay sector, Shri T. Roumuan Paite, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC), recently addressed tribal homestay owners and managers from Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim during a Capacity Building Workshop held at Hotel Samrat in New Delhi. This workshop was a collaborative effort between the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA).
During his address, Shri Paite underscored the pivotal role of NSTFDC as an apex financial institution aimed at enhancing the socio-economic and educational status of Scheduled Tribes through specialized financial support. He pointed out that tribal homestay enterprises are a vital representation of cultural sustainability and provide sustainable livelihood options. Workshops like this, he noted, play a critical role in bridging the gap between government initiatives and grassroots beneficiaries.
Financial Schemes for Tribal Entrepreneurs
In his session, Shri Paite outlined essential financial schemes offered by NSTFDC that are tailored to assist tribal entrepreneurs. One of the key initiatives is the **Term Loan Scheme**, which provides concessional loans up to ₹50 lakh for homestay owners, enabling crucial investments in infrastructure, renovation, and expansion. This financial support is channelized through State Channelizing Agencies, public sector banks, and regional rural banks.
Another significant initiative is the **Adivasi Mahila Sashaktikaran Yojana (AMSY)**. This scheme specifically caters to Scheduled Tribe women entrepreneurs, offering loans at a low interest rate of 4% per annum. It finances up to 90% of the project cost without requiring any mandatory promoter contribution, fostering entrepreneurship among women.
Additionally, the **Micro Credit Scheme for Self-Help Groups (SHGs)** enables collective income-generating activities for tribal SHGs. This scheme supports various ventures, including hospitality services, community kitchens, traditional crafts, and cultural programs.
Encouragement and Future Prospects
Shri Paite encouraged participants to leverage these schemes through their respective state agencies and Tribal Development Corporations for the advancement of their homestay enterprises. He highlighted that NSTFDC is actively expanding its outreach by collaborating with state agencies, thus enhancing its support across various regions.
Furthermore, he urged homestay owners to actively engage with institutional mechanisms to access financial help and establish sustainable businesses. He emphasized NSTFDC’s commitment to fostering economic self-reliance and enhancing creditworthiness among tribal entrepreneurs, especially in the tourism industry.
“Every tribal homestay is a window into India’s indigenous soul. NSTFDC’s schemes exist to ensure that the families preserving this heritage also prosper from it. We encourage tribal entrepreneurs, especially women, to access these opportunities and build strong enterprises,” Shri T. Roumuan Paite stated, reflecting the organization’s mission to empower and sustain tribal livelihoods.
