Tourism Ministry Launches Online System for Enhanced Service Delivery

In a significant move aimed at boosting transparency and efficiency within India’s tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism has unveiled a new online system for the classification of Accommodation Units and the recognition of Tourism Service Providers. This system, accessible through the National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI+) portal at nidhi.tourism.gov.in, allows for the filing, processing, and granting of applications digitally. Notably, this initiative includes an integrated payment gateway, enhancing user convenience.

24/7 Multilingual Tourist Helpline

To further ensure the safety and support of tourists, the Ministry has launched a round-the-clock Multilingual Tourist Helpline. Available at 1800111363 or via the short code 1363, this helpline caters to the needs of both domestic and international travelers by offering assistance in twelve languages, including ten international tongues. It is designed to provide critical information and guidance, particularly for tourists in distress while traveling across India.

New Handbook and e-Visa Expansion

In addition, the Ministry has also introduced a Handbook on Industry Status to the Tourism and Hospitality Sector, which was rolled out in September 2024. This handbook is intended for adaptation into state and union territory tourism policies, aiming for a cohesive approach to the industry.

Moreover, the e-Visa scheme has been expanded to cover nationals from 175 countries, allowing entry through 33 designated airports, 19 seaports, and four land ports, thereby simplifying accessibility for international visitors.

GST Reforms Transforming the Sector

The government has also initiated significant Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, set to take effect from September 22, 2025. These changes, particularly advantageous for the hospitality sector, aim to make travel more affordable for both domestic and international tourists. Some of the key reforms include:

  • The GST on hotel rooms priced below ₹7,500 per day has dropped from 12% to 5%, eliminating Input Tax Credit (ITC).
  • GST on buses with a seating capacity exceeding ten has decreased from 28% to 18%.
  • Art and cultural goods now benefit from a reduced GST rate of 5%, supporting artisans and sculptors directly.
  • Many food items and consumer durables used within the hospitality industry enjoy reduced GST rates of 5% or even nil, positively impacting operational costs.
