Middle East Crisis: Government Guarantees Sufficient Fertilizer Supplies Amid Ongoing Regional Turmoil
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has raised alarms about the availability of essential commodities, particularly fertilizers. In response, the Indian government has assured the public that the country’s fertilizer supply remains stable, with sufficient stocks of urea and other key nutrients. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India is well-prepared for the upcoming Kharif season, with fertilizer reserves exceeding those of the previous year.
Stable Fertilizer Stocks Ahead of Kharif Season
During a recent inter-ministerial media briefing, Jaiswal confirmed that India has more than adequate fertilizer stocks as preparations for the Kharif season commence. He highlighted that current urea reserves are higher than the same period last year, indicating a robust supply chain. “Our stocks of urea are more than what they were at this point last year,” he stated, reassuring farmers and stakeholders about the availability of this crucial crop nutrient.
In addition to urea, Jaiswal noted that reserves of other fertilizers, such as Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK), are also in a strong position. DAP stocks have reportedly doubled compared to 2025 levels, while NPK reserves have seen a significant increase compared to last year. This positive outlook aims to alleviate concerns regarding potential shortages amid the geopolitical tensions affecting the region.
Domestic Production and Maintenance Strategies
Jaiswal also addressed domestic production levels, stating that India’s urea production is expected to surpass nominal consumption, particularly as the Rabi season concludes. He explained that the government has strategically advanced maintenance schedules at several fertilizer plants to maximize output. “We are able to maximize production with available gas,” he noted, emphasizing the proactive measures taken to ensure a steady supply.
The Department of Fertilisers (DoF) has also taken steps to mitigate potential disruptions by issuing global tenders. These tenders have garnered a positive response, with expectations to receive the bulk of ordered quantities by the end of March. Furthermore, the DoF plans to procure spot gas competitively, with initial purchases scheduled for Tuesday, ensuring that production remains uninterrupted.
International Assurances and Monitoring
In light of the current geopolitical situation, Jaiswal reassured the public that India’s international partners have committed to maintaining uninterrupted fertilizer shipments. “All our partners have assured us of uninterrupted supplies,” he said, expressing confidence that the country will achieve and sustain comfortable fertilizer stocks by the time Kharif demand peaks on May 15.
The government is closely monitoring both domestic and global trends to ensure adequate fertilizer availability. Jaiswal urged commentators to rely on verified information rather than speculation, emphasizing the importance of factual reporting in addressing supply concerns. By taking these measures, the Indian government aims to support farmers and ensure food security during this critical agricultural season.
