LPG Relief: Indian Vessels Successfully Navigate Strait of Hormuz with 92,700 Tonne Cargo
In a significant development for India’s energy sector, two Indian-flagged LPG carriers successfully navigated the conflict-ridden Strait of Hormuz and are now en route to ports in Gujarat. The vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, are transporting a total of 92,700 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and are expected to arrive at their destinations by March 16 or 17. This movement comes as a relief amid ongoing disruptions in West Asia, where many ships had been stranded since the outbreak of conflict in the region.
Stable Fuel Supply Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Despite the geopolitical unrest in West Asia, India’s fuel supply remains stable. Senior officials from the petroleum ministry have confirmed that the country has adequate stocks of petrol and diesel, with refineries operating at full capacity. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma emphasized that there have been no reports of fuel shortages at retail outlets. She reassured consumers that India is self-sufficient in petrol and diesel production, negating the need for imports at this time. The government is actively monitoring the situation to ensure that fuel supplies remain uninterrupted, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary panic.
Concerns Over LPG Supply and Alternative Solutions
While petrol and diesel supplies are secure, concerns persist regarding the availability of cooking gas, particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officials have acknowledged that the current geopolitical climate poses challenges for LPG supply, although no immediate shortages have been reported. To mitigate potential disruptions, the government is encouraging commercial users to transition to piped natural gas (PNG). The Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) is collaborating with city gas distribution operators to expedite PNG connections where possible, ensuring that commercial consumers have access to alternative energy sources.
Panic Booking of LPG Cylinders on the Rise
In light of the ongoing tensions, there has been a notable surge in LPG bookings, driven largely by consumer panic. Sharma reported that bookings have increased from approximately 7.5 million to nearly 8.8 million in a short span, highlighting the urgency felt by many households. She urged the public to refrain from panic buying and to place orders only when necessary, emphasizing that such restraint would benefit everyone. The official also noted the growing trend of online bookings, which currently account for about 84% of total LPG orders, and expressed a desire to enhance this figure to nearly 100%.
