India Inc Experiences Impact of West Asia Turmoil
Shockwaves from recent military actions involving the US and Israel against Iran are reverberating through Indian industries, despite the geographical distance. The conflict has triggered a series of challenges, including gas supply restrictions, production cuts, and export delays. As a result, various sectors, from fertilizer plants to textile mills, are grappling with rising operational costs and logistical hurdles. Industry leaders are voicing concerns about the potential long-term impacts on trade and supply chains.
Production Cuts and Supply Chain Disruptions
In Gujarat, Triveni Iron and Steel Industries is facing a significant 50% reduction in production due to its heavy dependence on liquefied natural gas (LNG) from West Asia. This reliance exposes the company to supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict. Similarly, Jindal Stainless anticipates delays in steel shipments as the turmoil complicates trade routes and logistics. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) has halted fuel exports temporarily, struggling to secure crude oil amid rising uncertainties. Industry executives warn that tensions in oil and gas-producing regions can swiftly disrupt global energy supply chains. MS Banani, joint managing director of Axiom Gas Engineering, recalls the Iraq war’s impact, which saw crude prices soar to nearly $140 a barrel, leading to sharp increases in LNG, LPG, petrol, and diesel prices. The current conflict is once again straining Gulf supply routes, creating procurement challenges and rising costs for Indian importers.
Government Response to Energy Crisis
In response to the escalating crisis, the Indian government has invoked emergency powers to prioritize LPG supplies for households. Fertilizer plants, tea processors, and other essential sectors will receive LNG first. Major energy companies like Reliance Industries (RIL) and ONGC have been instructed to maximize LPG production while limiting its use in petrochemical manufacturing. RIL has announced plans to increase LPG output at its Jamnagar refining and petrochemical complexes to stabilize domestic supplies. Additionally, natural gas from its KG-D6 basin will be redirected to priority sectors in accordance with government directives. V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that while the situation remains manageable for now, prolonged disruptions could lead to physical shortages impacting transport, hospitality, and industrial sectors.
Challenges for Various Industries
The ongoing energy crisis is placing significant strain on tyre manufacturers, as crude oil derivatives like synthetic rubber and carbon black constitute nearly 70% of their raw materials. Erratic LPG supply is also affecting forging companies, with CEOs reporting shortages that hinder operations. With 80-85% of LPG directed towards domestic households, commercial and industrial users find themselves vulnerable during these disruptions. Apparel exporters, already facing challenges from punitive US tariffs, are now contending with rising costs. In Tiruppur, over 450 small and medium dyeing units that rely on gas-fired boilers are struggling to maintain production amid soaring raw material prices, including caustic soda and acetic acid. Gandhi Rajan, head of the dyeing units’ owners’ association, expressed concern that most units typically have gas reserves for only about 15 days, after which shutdowns become unavoidable.
Future Implications for Indian Industry
As the conflict continues, the implications for Indian industries could be severe. The prioritization of LPG for households may lead to further constraints for commercial and industrial users, exacerbating the challenges they face. If Brent crude prices remain above $90 a barrel, businesses could experience mounting cost pressures, affecting their overall operations and profitability. The interconnectedness of global supply chains means that disruptions in one region can have cascading effects worldwide. Industry leaders are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that will stabilize energy supplies and mitigate the impact on their operations.
